What Is Deadwooding and Why Is It Important?

Deadwooding removes dead, dying or broken branches from a tree’s canopy. It’s one of four core pruning categories, alongside crown thinning, crown lifting and structural pruning, and is typically the first thing addressed in a seasonal maintenance visit since dead material poses the most immediate risk.

How Often Should Deadwooding Be Done?

Most established trees benefit from a deadwooding check every one to two years, with an additional inspection after any significant storm event that may have loosened weak limbs. Fast growing species and trees near paths, driveways or power lines usually need a look every year, since they tend to shed limbs more readily than slower growing, established garden trees.

Can Deadwooding Be Done Without a Full Prune?

Yes. Deadwooding can be carried out as a standalone visit focused purely on removing dead material, without reducing or reshaping the rest of the healthy canopy. Crown thinning and crown lifting are often carried out at the same visit where a tree also needs it, since combining this work means the tree experiences one round of disturbance in place of several separate call-outs.

Is Deadwooding Ever an Emergency Job?

A large dead limb hanging precariously over a path, driveway or roof qualifies as an urgent job, since it can fail at any time without further warning. This is treated the same way as any other tree emergency: something posing an immediate risk to people, property or access needs attention before the next wind event, rather than being scheduled in as routine work. A smaller dead branch that has already fallen without causing damage, on the other hand, is usually fine to schedule as standard work.
